In nature, mold’s primary purpose is to help break down decaying organic material. However, mold growing inside of our living spaces isn’t so desirable. Mold causes unsightly stains, property damage, and allergy-like symptoms. Here are four signs of mold in the home to look out for.

1. Health Symptoms are Signs of Mold in the Home

If you experience a runny nose, itchy throat, watery eyes, stuffiness, sneezing, trouble breathing, or you start to cough when you arrive home, this could be an indication of mold. According to the CDC, spores can cause respiratory problems, headaches, and symptoms similar to a cold or flu. If you notice that your health improves when you’re away from home, call a professional for a test to see if mold is the culprit.

2. Moisture in Your Home

Mold needs moisture to thrive. This is why certain areas of your home, like the kitchen, bathroom, basement, and laundry room are especially susceptible. When mold is present in a home it will usually appear in dark, damp places first. If your bathroom or basement develops mold, take steps to thoroughly remove it. In a home with high humidity, use a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the environment.

3. Visual Signs of Mold in the Home

If you notice a black, brown, or gray substance on your wall with a fuzzy appearance, you may be seeing mold. It can appear in almost any color, including blue, green, yellow, and orange. You might notice irregular patterns on the walls, floors, ceilings, carpets, clothing, or other materials around the house.

4. Musty or Damp Odors

Mold has a distinct musty smell, like dirt and rotting leaves. A damp smell is one of the signs that you may have a problem. If you notice the smell, search your home until you find where the scent is the strongest. Once you discover the problem area, take steps to remove it before it spreads to other parts of your home.
